A Fresh Look — A New Site

My 2024 redesign
For a bevy of technical reasons I won’t get into, and because I just wanted something new, I’ve rebuilt my website! And ‘rebuilt’ is accurate — though a pure re-design would’ve been nice, it was about as full of a re-build as can be done. But neither here nor there! We’ve arrived! The new JonSully.net.
Not to get too hand-wavy into design language and artistry, but I love this new theme because it’s anchored on focus and words, which I strongly feel represents my life these days. Let me explain.
Focus
Deep work, and the focus that it represents, has been a major part of my life the last several years. To say that really dialing in my focus levels has changed my career would be an understatement. I’m… pretty into it. I’ve got a whole series going all about my journey into focus, deep work, digital minimalism, and the power of attention. Focus is important to me.
What I love about this design is that it is focused. There are very few images here. The most sparkly feature of my homepage is the rotating marquee under the header. Then the whole thing opens up with three paragraphs! Not exactly attention-grabbing. But it’s not meant to be. I love this design because it’s not attention grabbing, but it rewards attention given.
Nonetheless, the point this design serves is to be less flashy. It’s black-and-white. I’m not out to catch the eye with bright colors or modern design. On the contrary, this design feels more like a book. A good book, I hope.
Words
So much of my world has turned into writing the last several years. Maybe it’s one of the elements of slowing down and gaining focus. Maybe it’s reflective of significantly more reading. Maybe it’s remote work. Maybe it’s realizing that the pen really is quite powerful when wielded with vigor. Nonetheless, this new site design is dedicated to words. And those that read them. To fonts of beauty, and those that see them. To thoughts worth sharing, and those interested in consuming.
While I’ll leave this as a fairly short post, I’ll simply say that I’m quite enamored with this redesign. I think it’s as beautiful as it is representative of me. As I head into my thirties (that came quick), I hope that this motif of Focus and Words goes with me. In only a few short years it’s carried me so far. I can only speculate on where a few more will lead.
